Our Sedation Options
Oral Conscious Sedation
If you choose oral sedation, Dr. Cheryl Cushman will give you a prescription for sedative medication. These sedatives can relieve anxiety while allowing you to remain fully conscious. Oral sedation will help you enter a twilight state that allows you to communicate with us during your visit, but you will remember little if any of your procedure. We will usually ask you to take one dose at home before your appointment and another once you arrive at our office. These medications do not provide pain relief, so a local anesthetic is also administered. You will require a ride to and from our office when taking these anti-anxiety drugs.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, is commonly used in dentistry to help patients relax during treatment. Nitrous oxide is a colorless gas that is administered through a mask placed over the nose. As you inhale the gas, your anxiety will decrease and you will feel more comfortable. Nitrous oxide takes effect quickly and wears off quickly, so Dr. Cushman can easily adjust your sedation level during your appointment, and many patients are able to drive themselves home after treatment. We will administer a local anesthetic in combination with nitrous oxide in order to eliminate pain and discomfort.
Who Chooses Sedation Dentistry?
Anxious Patients
Dental anxiety and dental phobia are real issues that affect millions of Americans. You have nothing to be ashamed of if you have misgivings about dentists or dentistry. At our Lithia Springs office, we recommend that patients who are nervous about their upcoming procedure take advantage of dental sedation.
Restless Patients
More involved periodontal procedures can take an hour or longer, and some adults just aren't able to sit still for that long. If you'll get antsy after sitting in a dental chair for an extended period of time, consider sedation dentistry, which can help you achieve a calm, relaxed state of mind.
Sensitive Patients
Some patients have extra sensitive teeth and gums, while others have overactive gag reflexes. If you are especially prone to discomfort during dental treatment, sedation dentistry can calm your nerves and dull your senses. We'll also use local anesthesia to keep you as comfortable as possible.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs
Does sedation really work?
Yes! More and more dentists and dental specialists are offering sedation to their patients because it helps patients feel more comfortable and allows dentists complete procedures more efficiently.
Do I need to find a driver?
If you choose oral sedation, you will need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment. Nitrous oxide, on the other hand, wears off more quickly, so it is possible that you'll be able to drive yourself home after your procedure.
Will I lose consciousness under sedation?
At Atlanta West Periodontics & Dental Implants in Lithia Springs, we only use conscious sedation methods. You will not be completely knocked out. Instead, you will be in a calm, relaxed state. You will still be able to follow instructions and answer questions, but you will most likely not remember anything about your procedure.
