While not all dentists can perform a surgical tooth extraction, Dr. Cushman has undergone additional training, like an oral surgeon receives, to provide surgical extraction services at our Lithia Springs, GA, practice.

Aftercare and Recovery

Side effects usually subside after a few days, and then you can resume your normal eating, drinking, and cleaning habits.
Side effects usually subside after a few days, and then you can resume your normal eating, drinking, and cleaning habits.

First Few Hours

It is very important that you allow a blood clot to form at the extraction site. Bite down gently on the gauze covering your tooth socket in the first few hours after the procedure to help begin the process.

First Day

Side effects are typically the worst in the first 24 hours after tooth extraction. While side effects are generally minor, you can expect some irritation, swelling, and bleeding at the gum. Dr. Cushman typically prescribes anti-inflammatories and mild pain medication to help you with initial discomfort.

Day 2-3

We recommend eating a soft foods diet for at least 48 hours days to minimize irritation. Also, avoid drinking from a straw or forcefully cleaning your mouth to prevent dislodging the clot and causing a dry socket. Side effects usually subside after a few days, and then you can resume your normal eating, drinking, and cleaning habits.

If you have questions at any time in your recovery or experience complications like dry socket, please call our office in Lithia Springs, GA, or contact us online.

Restoring Your Smile

We understand that repairing your smile is a priority after tooth extraction. To help expedite the process, Dr. Cushman will create a custom restorative dentistry treatment plan prior to your tooth extraction so we can get started as soon as possible. If you decide to get a dental implant, we may be able to perform the procedure in the very same appointment.

Whatever your specific treatment plan, restorative care can have tremendous benefits on your long-term oral health and self-confidence.

We encourage you to learn more about dental implants and to contact our Lithia Springs practice to set up a consultation.
