Meet the Periodontist Dr. Cheryl L. Cushman
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Dr. Cushman moved to the Atlanta area after graduating from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry in 1988. She practiced as a general dentist for two years before returning to school to become a periodontist.
Now with over 25 years of experience in the periodontal field, Dr. Cushman provides excellent care to patients suffering from periodontal disease and those in need of dental implants. The cornerstone of her practice philosophy is empathy, and she is committed to treating every patient she sees with respect and kindness.
What Is a Periodontist?
Periodontists are highly trained dental specialists. In fact, periodontics is one of only two types of surgical specialties in the field of dentistry. Periodontics is primarily concerned with the supporting structures of the teeth, such as the gums and the tooth roots.
Becoming a periodontist requires at least three additional years of school after general dental school, so you can trust that every periodontist is a dedicated dental professional who is passionate about helping patients maintain optimal oral health.
In practice, periodontal professionals mostly treat patients with periodontal diseases like gingivitis or patients in need of dental implants. A periodontist like Dr. Cushman is better equipped to address these issues than a general dentist because of her specialized training and advanced knowledge.
Implants are a major focus at our practice. These small metal posts mimic the function of tooth roots, providing unparalleled stability and durability for restorations. If you require preparatory treatment, Dr. Cushman can perform bone grafting, ridge augmentation, and sinus lifts on-site.Learn More

Dentist or Periodontist? Which Do I Need?
Periodontists are more specialized than regular dentists, and their scope of care is narrower. If you are simply in need of routine dental cleaning, or perhaps a cosmetic treatment like teeth whitening, then a dentist can help. However, if you are dealing with periodontal disease, or if you are interested in dental implant surgery, you will be best served by a periodontist.
While some dentists will address periodontal disease or place implants, most will refer that work to a periodontal professional. Even if your dentist offers to perform periodontal work, you should ask how experienced he or she is with that kind of treatment. Most likely, a specialist with advanced training in periodontics will be able to serve you better.
If you are not sure whether you require general dental care or more advanced periodontics, contact our practice in Lithia Springs, GA. We can listen to your situation and honestly recommend what kind of care you should seek.
